Design process modelling is well-founded in fields of mechanical engineering, and product design and development but not in Building Design (BD). This paper looks at the selection process when choosing appropriate models for specific BD processes. The paper adapts process model selection criteria from Trauer's work and combines it with anecdotal evidence from the authors to select these models. The selection criteria were ranked, categorised, and applied to BD processes explained. Process models related to each selection criteria were then selected from backward snowballing of literature.

Background
Screening for depression in older adults is recommended.
AimsTo evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the Two-Question Screen for older adults and compare it with other screening instruments for depression.
MethodWe undertook a literature search for studies assessing the diagnostic performance of depression screening instruments in older adults. Combined diagnostic accuracy including sensitivity and specificity were the primary outcomes. Potential risks of bias and the quality of studies were also assessed.
ResultsA total of 46506 participants from 132 studies were identified evaluating 16 screening instruments. The majority of studies (63/132) used various versions of the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and 6 used the Two-Question Screen. The combined sensitivity and specificity for the Two-Question Screen were 91.8% (95% CI 85.2–95.6) and 67.7% (95% CI 58.1–76.0), respectively; the diagnostic performance area under the curve (AUC) was 90%. The Two-Question Screen showed comparable performance with other instruments, including clinician-rated scales. The One-Question Screen showed the lowest diagnostic performance with an AUC of 78%. In subgroup analysis, the Two-Question Screen also had good diagnostic performance in screening for major depressive disorder.
ConclusionsThe Two-Question Screen is a simple and short instrument for depression screening. Its diagnostic performance is comparable with other instruments and, therefore, it would be favourable to use it for older adult screening programmes.

Biological cells are major building blocks of tissues and organs of living organisms. These cells are also being used as biomarkers for diagnosis and sources for regenerative medicine. To better understand and even regulate diverse activities of cells, materials capable of interacting with cells have been designed by integrating various material chemistry, characterization, and processing techniques. These materials are often integrated with various nano- and microscale engineering devices. In this article, we provide an overview of materials for biological modulation, sensing, and imaging and also discuss opportunities for the future development of multifunctional materials for sensing and therapies.

Objective.
To examine potential clinical outcomes and cost of active methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) surveillance with and without decolonization in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) from the perspective of healthcare providers in Hong Kong.
Design.Decision analysis modeling.
Setting.NICU.
Patients.Hypothetical cohort of patients admitted to an NICU.
Methods. We designed a decision tree to simulate potential outcomes of active MRSA surveillance with and without decolonization in patients admitted to an NICU. Outcome measures included total direct medical cost per patient, MRSA infection rate, and MRSA-associated mortality rate. Model inputs were derived from the literature. Sensitivity analyses evaluated the impact of uncertainty in all model variables.
Results. In the base-case analysis, active surveillance plus decolonization showed a lower expected MRSA infection rate (0.911% vs 1.759%), MRSA-associated mortality rate (0.223% vs 0.431%), and total cost per patient (USD 47,294 vs USD 48,031) compared with active surveillance alone. Sensitivity analyses showed that active surveillance plus decolonization cost less and had lower event rates if the incidence risk ratio of acquiring MRSA infections in carriers after decolonization was less than 0.997. In 10,000 Monte Carlo simulations, active surveillance plus decolonization was significantly less costly than active surveillance alone 99.9% of the time, and both the MRSA infection rate and the MRSA-associated mortality rate were significantly lower 99.9% of the time.
Conclusions.Active surveillance plus decolonization for patients admitted to NICUs appears to be cost saving and effective in reducing the MRSA infection rate and the MRSA-associated mortality rate if addition of decolonization to active surveillance reduces the risk of MRSA infection.

The hierarchical structure of type I collagen fibrils is a key contributor to the mechanical properties of the extracellular matrix (ECM). It is known that the process of in vitro fibrillogenesis strongly depends on the pH of the collagen solution. To date, there are few methods available for precisely controlling and investigating the dependence of collagen fibril assembly on the local pH. The objective of this work was to create highly defined pH gradients to systematically determine the effects of local pH on microscale collagen fibrillogenesis and alignment. We use a microfluidic mixing device to create a diffusion controlled pH gradient, which in turn initiates the self-assembly and concurrent flow-alignment of soluble collagen. Finite element method simulations of the hydrodynamic and diffusive phenomena are used to calculate the local concentrations of the components involved in the reaction. We develop a model to analytically calculate the local pH in the microfluidic device from these concentrations. A comparison with the experimental results from polarized light microscopy are in good agreement with the simulations.

Surface properties of electrically conducting polymers, including charge-density and wettability, can be altered reversibly by oxidation or reduction. Thus, these materials are interesting systems on which to study the interactions of proteins and cells with surfaces. The properties of polypyrrole were studied in environments suitable for protein adsorption and cell culture. Optically transparent films of polypyrrole were synthesized, and the stability of the oxidized and reduced states in aqueous media were studied. UV/VIS spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and spectroelectrochemistry measurements confirmed the oxidation state of the polymer films. The positively-charged form of polypyrrole could be changed to its neutral form by applying a constant potential (-0.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl reference). It was found that the shape of bovine aortic endothelial cells on fibronectin-coated polypyrrole films can be controlled by varying the oxidation state of the polypyrrole.

Thin films of polypyrrole were synthesized using both chemical oxidative and electrochemical methods. The resulting oxidized films were characterized by UV/VIS spectroscopy, contact angle and conductivity measurements. In vitro studies suggest that extracellular matrix molecules, such as fibronectin, adsorb efficiently onto polypyrrole thin films and that 3T3 Balb/c mouse fibroblasts attach and spread normally on polypyrrole.
